UNICUT WINS SUPERCAR COMPONENT CONTRACT

Unicut Precision has won an 80,000 a year trim, instrument and switchgear export contract for a European supercar that will involve ultra-high precision turning, contouring, cross hole drilling, grooving, slotting and broaching as well as deep fine hole drilling, form milling and full in-cycle deburring in single operational cycles.

Said joint managing director of the Welwyn Garden City subcontractor Jason Nicholson: “It has taken almost a year working with the European customer to develop the workpiece designs that will initially involve eight different components.” Critical in winning the contract was the flexibility Unicut had in its top of the range Citizen M32 and L32 CNC sliding head turn-mill centres and Miyano ABX twin-spindle, triple turret turning centre to generate super surface finishes for the internal trim components to be produced in line with the customer’s requirements.

Unicut has also constructed a clean room in its Welwyn Garden City factory where the parts are finally visually inspected and individually packed ready for direct to line delivery to the customer. Added joint managing director Charles Kenny: “The customer was very impressed with our non-contact video based inspection that has the ability to check complex forms and feature relationships very quickly and accompany the inspection with automatic generation of quality reports. Also, because of our programmable cleaning of components and source of very high quality anodising to supply a variety of different colours, made the package we were able to offer from a single source very competitive against other European suppliers.
